Vintage Disney turns up everywhere: mugs, figurines, books and toys. Some pieces are worth a few dollars and some are real treasures. Here's how to tell what you've got.
1. Read the copyright mark
Look on the bottom or the tag. Items marked "Walt Disney Productions" or "WDP" generally date from before the mid-1980s, when the company changed its name to The Walt Disney Company.
2. Look for a maker's mark
Many Disney items were made under license by other companies. The maker's name and country of origin help narrow down the age.
3. Note where it was sold
Theme park and Disney Store exclusives, and items made for a specific anniversary or event, are often more collectible than mass-market pieces.
4. Check for limited editions
Numbered pieces, certificates of authenticity and original boxes all add value.
5. Be honest about condition
Chips, crazing, faded paint and missing parts lower value. Original boxes in good shape raise it.
6. Watch for reproductions
Popular characters and designs have been reissued many times. A piece that looks brand new but claims to be decades old deserves a closer look.
7. Check sold prices, not asking prices
Search for your item and filter by sold or completed listings. What people actually paid is the real value.
