How to Hang a Gallery Wall That Looks Collected, Not Cluttered

Vintage New Orleans jazz print

A gallery wall is the best way to show off art with personality: a vintage print here, an original drawing there, maybe a pennant or a funny sign. Here's how to hang one that looks collected over time instead of cluttered.

1. Start with one anchor piece

Pick your largest or favorite piece and build around it. It usually goes slightly off center or in the middle of the arrangement.

2. Find a common thread

Mixed art looks intentional when something ties it together: a color you repeat, similar frame finishes, or one subject like New Orleans, birds or jazz.

3. Lay it out on the floor first

Arrange everything on the floor in front of the wall and move pieces around until it feels balanced. Snap a photo once you like it.

4. Make paper templates

Trace each frame on kraft paper, cut it out, mark where the nail goes and tape the templates to the wall. You can rearrange without making a single extra hole.

5. Hang it at eye level

The center of the whole grouping should sit about 57 to 60 inches from the floor. Over a sofa or console, leave 8 to 10 inches above the furniture.

6. Keep spacing consistent

Two to three inches between frames keeps the wall looking like one collection.

7. Mix shapes and sizes

Combine tall and wide pieces, and add one unexpected object, like a small mirror, a vintage plate or a felt pennant.

8. Leave room to grow

The best gallery walls keep evolving. Leave a little space for the next great find.
