Vintage art books, museum catalogs and old hardcovers make wonderful decor and even better reading. A few habits keep them in good shape for decades.
1. Store books upright
Shelve books standing straight and snug, with bookends so they don't lean. Leaning books warp over time.
2. Lay oversized books flat
Big, heavy art books and coffee table books are better stored flat, stacked no more than a few high.
3. Keep them out of the sun
Direct sunlight fades spines and covers fast, and heat dries out bindings.
4. Avoid damp spaces
Basements and attics invite mold, warping and pests. A comfortable living space is the best place for books.
5. Pull books from the middle
Don't tug a book off the shelf by the top of its spine. Push the neighbors back and grab the book by its sides.
6. Protect dust jackets
Dust jackets add a lot of value to collectible books. Clear archival jacket covers keep them from tearing.
7. Dust gently
Use a soft brush or a dry microfiber cloth, working from the spine outward.
8. Skip tape and glue
Household tape yellows and damages paper. Leave real repairs to a book conservator.
